Book Review West Ham United 1965-1973

If you’re like me and wondering what on earth to ask for for Christmas or what to buy a Hammers fan for a present, then look no further than Alan Shubrooks’ beautifully produced book of photographs taken over an 8 year period of West Ham United’s home and away games.

From the Vaults: West Ham United v Fulham 22nd February 2019

Controversy surrounded West Ham’s equaliser by Hernandez after Babel had put Fulham ahead on 3 mins after a bright start for the visitors as the Hammers began to get back in to the game. The Hammers capitalised on Fulham keeper Rico’s failure to clear a corner as Antoni and Ogbonna flicked on for Hernandez to head the ball home.

From The Vaults: West Ham United v Manchester City 29th April 2018

Antonio’s impressive over head kick to open the scoring was just another excellent moment we almost expect from a player who has transformed into a goal scoring machine since lockdown restart.

From the Vaults: West Ham United 2 Manchester United 0 22nd September 2019

Pellegrini hailed the Hammers as a more solid and consistent side as the excellent start to the 2019-20 season continued with a 2-0 home win over Manchester United. Goals from Yarmolenko and Cresswell pushed the Hammers back into 5th with only goal difference separating them from Arsenal and Leicester City.

From the Vaults: West Ham Utd v Newcastle 3rd November 2019

Our opening season defeat to Newcastle continues the poor form we have against the Magpies that was all too evident last season in the 2-3 defeat at London Stadium that continued a five game stretch without a Premier League win at that time.

From the Vaults: West Ham United 2 Norwich City 0 31st August 2019

West Ham United climbed to 5th in the Premier League after a convincing 2-0 win against the Canaries, who suffered their 3rd defeat since returning to the top flight, at the London Stadium. Then manager, Manuel Pellegrini hailed Haller as the complete player after he scored twice against Watford before giving the Hammers the lead from close range at home on 24th minute from a Masuaku cross.

The 83rd FA Cup final took place at Wembley Stadium on 2nd May 1964 between West Ham United and Preston North End. The Hammers, captained by Bobby Moore and managed by Ron Greenwood has seen off Charlton Athletic, Leyton Orient – although through a replay, Swindon and Burnley in the previous rounds to earn a semi final place against Manchester United at Hillsborough on 14th March of that year. The Hammers first semi final appearance for 31 years.

In Focus: Sebastien Haller

Haller then signed for West Ham United on 17th July 2019 for a record fee of £45m on a 5 year deal. Seen as a statement of intent from the club, along with the signings of Anderson, Diop and Fornals. Sebastian definitely came with a great reputation for being a handful and bullying defenders with his physicality.

Through the Lens: Photographs From The Past Part 7: Alvin Martin Hat-trick

Alvin Martin scores a hat-trick against 3 different goalkeepers in a memorable match in the chase for the Division 1 league title during the 1985/86 season.

In Focus: Mark Noble

Noble rejected a call up to the Republic of Ireland squad, qualifying due to his grandparents being both Cork born. Mark said “There are young Irish kids playing well that deserve and would appreciate an Irish cap more than I would.”
